Since 2010, CC simulation has maintained the Royal Australian Navy Medical School's (RANMS) simulation spaces at HMAS Penguin. At that time the school had only two small simulation labs. Today the five dedicated simulation training areas cover approximately 1000m2.
In 2013, CC Simulation was engaged by HMAS Penguin and Laerdal Australia to convert the decommissioned Balmoral Naval Hospital into a multi-room, multidisciplinary simulation environment. The challenge for CC Simulation was to maintain a similar user interface as the existing simulation labs while expanding the control to five simulation environments across two separate control rooms. Because of CC Simulation's ongoing relationship with the RANMS and knowledge of Laerdal's Simview package, CC Simulation delivered a solution that met the Navy's technical and workflow requirements.
Timely and preventative maintenance
Fixed costs and pre-approved budget for ongoing maintenance and planned upgrades
Equipment management allows the school's management team to forward plan equipment replacement
Knowledge continuity as regular staff turnover in the defence forces means knowledge can easily be lost when staff leave
Upgrading from analogue to fully digital AV systems over the years in a planned and managed way to minimise downtime and maintain consistent workflow across the different simulation areas
Consult as to the best functional and economical path to transition away from SimView, as a debriefing server, when it became obsolete
Sim 1
Single room simulating a ships sick bay with adjacent control room. AV links the sim room, control room and the debriefing area in Sim 3.
Sim 2
Multipurpose single bedspace simulation room with adjacent control room. AV links the sim room, control room and the debriefing area in Sim 3.
Sim 3
Multipurpose single bedspace simulation space with additional clinical training space and interactive touch screen. Adjacent control room and debriefing space.
Sim 4
Multidisciplinary simulation space used for simulation training from small group sessions to mass casualty events. The simulation space consists of:
An operating theatre
2-bed resuscitation bay
4-bed ward (including an ICU bedspace)
Main corridor
Helicopter for crew training
2 control rooms
Debrief room
Sim 5
Large open space is primarily used for mass casualty scenarios. The space contains:
Temporary walls to create rooms and corridors
Bluetooth sound system throughout the space
Smoke machines
